Gingivitis, Periodontal Disease & Pink in The Sink

Most people are aware of the fact that oral inflammation and infections due to gingivitis, periodontal disease or infected gums or root canals can contribute to strokes and heart attacks, but many are not aware of the fact that they can also contribute to cognitive decline and dementia.

Each of these oral maladies can result in bacterial infections and dangerous inflammation within inches of the brain. Moreover, we know that the infections from these ailments can spread through connecting tissues from the mouth into the brain. And a recent study found a correlation between the number of teeth seniors have and their cognitive status. So oral health is just really important for good brain health.

Here is a good introduction to this topic, by Dr. Burhenne  in an interview with David Perlmutter, M.D. one of the most prolific Alzheimer’s experts in the world.

Here once again are two good articles on this topic, one from the Life Extension foundation, noting the dangers to various organs and systems in the body along with a novel way to keep these at bay. And an article on Holistic Dental Care and the Oral Microbiome. In this article Dr. Jocker’s talks about the importance of the oral microbiome, cavitations, and how they can influence the health of the entire body, including the risk for Alzheimer’s. He also talks about the new “holistic” or biological Dentistry, and how their practice may differ from and be safer than those of traditional dentists, regarding X-ray, non-mercury fillings, the absence of fluoride, oil pulling and other healthy oral practices. They also provide link to how you can find a holistic or biological dentist in your area.
