Sleep Essentials

Sleep Essentials by ABC Brain

As we noted earlier often individuals with depression have problems getting a good night’s sleep as well. As we note under Brain Health Essentials, Step 5 Sleep is critical to brain health, and in particular to maintaining a healthy mood.
If one is not getting the sleep they need then their brain may not have the energy it needs to think positive, nor the cleansing the brain needs to function properly.  Therefore anyone concerned about their mind, mood or memory needs to pay close attention to their sleep, to make sure they are getting the hours of good quality sleep that their brain needs in order to perform optimally.

In particular there are three questions one needs to ask their self (and perhaps their partner) to help assess whether or not they are getting the quality of sleep that their brain needs.

  1. Am I getting 7-9 hours of good quality sleep.  And if not –
  2. Do I have Sleep Apnea, or do I snore loudly during sleep
  3. Are my circadian rhythms off.  Do I feel like awake when I should be falling asleep.

If you are having problems going to sleep or staying asleep we would encourage you to study Step # 5 on Adequate Sleep.  Try to identify any issues relevant for you, and what to do, then develop a plan, perhaps with the help of your physician or health coach, and follow it carefully until those issues are resolved.

There are a lot of conflicting opinions in this field but one thing all researchers are agreed on is the sooner individuals begin learning and taking steps to improve their brain health the easier and less expensive it will be.
