If you are having problems with your memory, there are basically two different approaches to correcting that. We will review those below.
If you are having problems with your memory, there are basically two different approaches to correcting that. We will review those below.
Improve the health of your brain, especially the biological mechanisms of memory, i.e. your neurons, neurites, neurotransmitters of memory (primarily acetylcholine), and the receptors of these chemical (memory) messengers, as well as the energy generators in your brain cells. If your brain cells are breaking down or dying faster than you can repair or rebuild them, due to aging, inflammation, oxidative stress or whatever, if your brain is not getting the nutrients needed to effectively make and retain memories, you are going to have a hard time remembering. Moreover, if your brain structures and chemistry are not what they needs to be, you will have a much more difficult time employing method #2.
Strategies or techniques to help you create, retain and recall all that you wish to remember. In academic circles these are referred to as “mnemonic” strategies (from the Greek word Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory). These are strategies or techniques used to create associations that can help you generate more indelible mental images, that enable you to make the most of your brain biology, i.e. structures and chemistry, to remember things better.
If you can tell that your memory is slipping, but others have not yet noticed, good! We call that “subjective cognitive impairment,” and you have come to the right place. For NOW is the best time to employ these measures – while you can still, understand and remember to take the required actions.
If you have not noticed any significant decline in your memory, but just want to improve it, you may still want to read over the next section on “how to improve the health of your brain” and watch the first video, at least, but then skip down to “Strategies & Techniques for Memory Improvement."
To learn how to Improve the health of your brain, at this stage, we suggest as a minimum watching this video on how to eat like a genius.
